Full-time classroom teachers who are taking part in our Marine Education Program can be considered for the JOHN H. PRESCOTT and WILLIAM E. SCHULZ National Marine Education Awards. The winner of each of these awards will receive a $500.00 grant. Additionally, each teacher and a companion will be allowed to spend a day with the Right Whale Research Team on board the research ship (weather permitting) as it operates somewhere in the Bay of Fundy. This will allow the selected teachers to observe whales and whale research up close and personal.
John H. Prescott National Marine Education Award
The winner of the John H. Prescott National Marine Education Award will be selected based on marine curricula project(s) or activities submitted to The Ocean Society that can be utilized by a classroom teacher. The material submitted can apply to any grade K-12 and involve any discipline. The material submitted must have been "field-tested" in your classroom and be in a format that any teacher can use right out of the box, complete with a list of any materials required. The goal of the project(s) or activities is to stimulate students to be aware of events taking place in the world and encourage them to become involved and be a positive force for change.
William E. Schulz National Marine Education Award
The winner of the William E. Schulz National Marine Education Award will be based on the ability of a teacher to create a project in his or her school that will bring together teachers, students and parents. This joint effort should be educational, exciting and create a sense of community in those involved in the project. An example of this is a school that painted an ocean mural which covered an entire wall in the cafeteria. They then invited the town's citizens for the dedication ceremony and social function that included an educational program on marine mammals. One of the primary objectives of this award is to educate people outside of the school environment.
